I believe that we would all agree that our experiences at Coral Gables High were fundamental in the formation of our character. Some of us were great students who studied hard, made great grades, went to the college of our choosing, and followed traditional career paths. Others were not so, shall we say traditional. We grew up at a time when the world was our oyster and we knew no fear or limits. After all we grew up amid the turmoil and changes of the 60's. Through it all though, we somehow stayed a bit grounded, and still made it. Allbeit in our own way.
I had the opportunity to speak with the current Principal of Gables, Mr. Adolfo Costa. What a dynamic individual. Adolfo (as he prefers to be called), spoke to me of how students today no longer have the sense of community and connectedness that exsisted back in our day. He commented that one of his main goals is to work to create an environment that fosters those values, And he shared his desire to have the Alumni become actively involved with the school. As our conversation continued he related the many changes that have taken place at the school over the past 40 years including the addition of the International Bacalaureate Program and a variety of academies within the school.
One of Adolfo's other driving passions is the desire to help kids find themselves and to support students who are not traditionally provided with the opportunity to advance their education beyond high school. These students may fall into several different profiles. One of those is the profile of the really bright kid who DOESN'T thrive in a high school setting because they tend to march to the beat of a different drummer. More often than not these individuals thrive and excel in a college or a vocational environment. Unfortunately these are often the ones who may not have the financial where with all to continue their education and scholarship programs are but a pipe dream. The standard expectation is that their education will end with high school graduation.
Opportunity is born from need. Legacy is the ability to pay it forward. As such the Coral Gables Senior High Class of 1970 Reunion Committee is establishing a scholarship fund. A portion of purchase price of each ticket will go toward this fund. Our goal is to raise $10,000. The Committee agreed that they would like to establish this as an ongoing scholarship.
